2nd Street Townhouse

Park slope, Brooklyn

Photographer | Hanna Grankvist

In collaboration with JM Architecture, this historic Park Slope landmark brownstone was thoughtfully updated to suit the contemporary needs of a young family while honoring its rich architectural heritage.

On the parlor floor, the original woodwork and plaster moldings were carefully restored, establishing the character of the house. New elements were introduced with the same sensitivity: handmade ceramic tile in a deep, glazed green frames the fireplace, while mosaic tilework marks the threshold of the parlor. The furnishings, among them solid wood dining tables, woven paper-cord chairs, low sofas and mid-century pieces, were chosen to answer the craftsmanship of the architecture rather than compete with it. The house retains the gravity of its Brooklyn origins while accommodating the ease of modern family life.
