Chatham House

A comprehensive exterior overhaul and architectural expansion gives new life to this historic home in Chatham, New Jersey. Our design intervention lifts the roof ridge line to carve out a light-filled half-story retreat, honoring classic vernacular while creating space for contemporary living.

Cedar shingles, stone masonry, a standing seam metal porch roof, and warm wooden carriage doors root the exterior in the home's historic setting. By removing the former attic, the new half-story encompasses a cozy family room, home office, guest suite, full bath, and built-in coffee bar. Inside, reclaimed timber ceiling beams, whitewashed shiplap, and custom white oak millwork form an inviting architectural foundation, while built-in window nooks tucked under dormer gables offer intimate reading perches. Tailored furnishings, tufted leather headboards, oak vanities with honed stone slabs, and plush seating in soft blues and subtle ochres, complete the home's warm, refined aesthetic.
